Some believe gargoyles have been around for almost 2000 years.

"Gargoyle" is derived from the French word for "throat". They were originally medieval water spouts--or water spitters. When water came out, it made a "gargle" sound.

If it does not spit water, but has a face or resembles a creature, it is a "grotesque".

Contrary to popular belief, they are actually protectors from evil and are not demonic.

A combination of several different animals is a "chimera".
